Tyres for Overlanding – for anyone who drives further than the road goes
Overlanding is about getting through on your own terms, far from tarmac, service and comfort. That places entirely different demands on tyres than ordinary driving. You need tyres that handle rough terrain, heavy loads and long distances without giving way, and that work as well on the motorway as on the gravel road that runs out in the middle of nowhere.
What should you consider when choosing tyres for overlanding?
Three things matter most: durability, load capacity and versatility. An overlanding tyre has to handle rough terrain without puncturing, carry the vehicle's full load including equipment, and still work well over long distances on tarmac. The load index matters all the more when the vehicle is fully packed with a tent, water, food and spare parts, since the gross weight can be considerably higher than on a normally loaded vehicle. Reinforced sidewalls are an important criterion for overlanding: they protect against sharp rocks and edges that could otherwise cause a puncture far from the nearest help.
All-Terrain tyres for overlanding
All-Terrain is the first choice for most overlanders. They handle tarmac, gravel, mud and light terrain without compromising ride comfort over long distances. Quiet enough for motorway driving but capable enough for most off-road situations you meet on an overland trip. Many AT tyres also carry the 3PMSF marking and are approved as winter tyres, which is a big plus if you plan to drive in Scandinavia or other cold climates. We recommend AT tyres from Blackbear, Ridgeblade and BF Goodrich for overlanding – brands with documented performance in demanding conditions.
Mud-Terrain tyres for overlanding
Mud-Terrain is the right choice for anyone planning to drive in genuinely rough terrain such as deep mud, loose sand, rocky surfaces and steep slopes. Deep tread blocks and reinforced sidewalls give maximum grip and protection in the most demanding conditions. The downside is that MT tyres are noisier and increase fuel consumption on ordinary roads, which is a trade-off every overlander has to make based on their route.
Spare tyres and puncture protection
On an overland trip far from civilisation a spare tyre is not an option, it is a necessity. Make sure the spare matches the other tyres on the vehicle in dimension and load index. Puncture protection spray and a portable compressor system are good complements, but nothing replaces a fully working spare when you need it most.
Tyre pressure and overlanding
The right tyre pressure is decisive for overlanding. Lower pressure in terrain gives a larger contact patch and better grip, but means you have to pump the tyres up again before returning to tarmac. Too low a pressure at high speed can cause overheating and, at worst, tyre damage. A good compressor and a reliable pressure gauge are standard in every overlanding kit.
Which vehicles suit overlanding tyres?
Overlanding tyres suit pickups, SUVs and 4x4s: vehicles with enough ground clearance and four-wheel drive to actually get through in terrain. Popular overland vehicles in Sweden are the Ford Ranger, Toyota Land Cruiser, Volkswagen Amarok, Nissan Navara and Mercedes G-Class.
